Hi, I’m Mike Staver, this is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question:
Dear Mike, sales jobs are difficult in my experience, and being a salesperson, I realize how difficult they are. How do I stay motivated when sales are slow or the going gets tough?
Great question! Couple ways you do it:
1. You get around really successful salespeople. You get around people who are really positive and energetic. You start brainstorming with people who are being successful no matter what the economic conditions are and just listen to what they do well.
2. Next I want you to do the work! Most of the time when sales get slow we get paralyzed by the anxiety or frustration that we feel because things aren’t happening. I want you to get in the game more aggressively, I want you to do what works more aggressively. It’s my experience when we do the right things in the right sequence great things start to happen.
So, if you get around really smart people who are being successful, you really identify what are the specific behavior patterns they’re engaged in that are making them successful, you stay persistent and go to work every single day, ultimately you will be effective. Now you can go to work every single day and do the wrong stuff and never be successful… so, be around successful people, identify the most successful methodologies (don’t reinvent the wheel, don’t try to guess. Then get to work early and stay there late every single day doing what you need to do to be successful.
3. Finally, make sure you are taking care of yourself physically. Make sure that you’re eating right and drinking water and staying physically healthy. And exercise, so that you keep emotional vitality in your life.
So, don’t expect not to feel uncomfortable, make sure you surround yourself with people who support your learning when making a mistake, and be judicious about when and where you make them, if possible.
Hope that’s helpful, happy selling! I’m Mike Staver, take care.
