Fostering a Culture of Innovation

 

Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.

“How can individuals and organizations foster a culture of innovation and adapt to the rapidly changing job market and technological advances?”

You guys are getting legit on your questions.

Here’s how. You can not punish failure. You have to celebrate people trying new things, breaking things down, trying different strategies, working things out. You know, Post-It notes were created out of failure. The guy who invented Post-It notes for 3M Corporation was inventing glue. And the glue he invented didn’t stick. One of the number one selling products for 3M is Post-In notes because they figured out an application. But if they punished him and told him he failed because the glue didn’t stick well enough, we wouldn’t have Post-It notes today. So you develop a culture of innovation by looking at the business and saying, we want you to try new and crazy things.

We’re right in the middle, in my firm, of working with artificial intelligence and trying to figure out how it works and chat and all these kinds of things. And we’re playing around with them. And I don’t know how it’s going to fall out, to tell you the truth. But I know if I don’t celebrate my team taking risks and breaking things and failing, we’re never going to get anywhere. And so the way that you do it is you create a culture where innovation is celebrated, even if it fails.
