Coach or Therapist

Hi everybody, I’m Mike Staver. Welcome to another episode of Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people like you. Here’s the question:

I’m looking for some one-to-one help. How do I know if I should choose a coach or a therapist?

If it’s an emotional issue (if you’re depressed, your anxious, you’re having issues in your relationship, or there is something emotional or psychological in the way of your daily functioning) you should get a therapist. They’re generally experts at that kind of thing.

A coach, like me, is generally going to help you navigate better certain performance challenges. Now I will tell you there are times when I get asked relationship questions. And I answer them! But I don’t answer them as a therapist. As Superman’s father said “A person’s gotta know their limitations.”

So, if you’re dealing with a relationship issue, personal issues, parenting issues… well, there are good parenting coaches though. Usually a therapist is specific to psychological issues that need the expertise that goes with that.

Alright! Find yourself a coach though, I’m glad you’re looking for one-to-one help. Don’t give up on it.

Take care, I’m Mike Staver.
