Hi everybody, I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question:
I’m a division head of a hospital. How long do I put up with a snarky, bad attitude leader that reports to me?
Well, here’s the question. If it’s messing up your culture, if it’s creating bad things for you, if you’re getting bad reviews from patients… you don’t put up with them for very long.
I have this three strikes and you’re out policy. First time I chat with them, second time I give them a plan for performance, third time I give them a limit to the time they can do it before they’re out.
A bad person can trash your culture in a minute! Do not allow it to continue. If you do, you’re going to find yourself in a world of hurt.
So the answer is: for as long as they’re improving, as long as it doesn’t affect your culture negatively, and as long as customers (in your case patients) are still taken care of. That’s how long you put up with it. You may have HR requirements and that kind of thing which I can’t speak to, but culture, people, patients – pay attention to that, and make sure they’re improving.
I’m Mike Staver, I hope that was helpful! Take care.
