As I write this, I am just a day away from leaving on my annual ride with my buddies to Sturgis, South Dakota. Sturgis is the largest motorcycle rally in the world. Thousands of bikers descend on this small South Dakota town every year for a week.
We always ride, never trailer. Here’s why. The guys I ride with are amazing friends. But bigger than that I know when I throw my leg over that Harley tomorrow morning, hit the start button and the engine pierces the early morning silence, all will be well. It’s as if the bag on the back and the start of the engine triggers a primitive response. Before I get 20 miles out of town I will literally feel the stress and pressure leave. It’s so dramatic that it gives me chills when it happens. It happens EVERY time.
As I was texting with a friend this morning (who doesn’t ride) they said, “I need something I am passionate about, that has that effect on me!” That’s when I decided to write about this topic. EVERYONE needs something that clears their mind, renews their soul and invigorates their core. That something should not be work. I love what I do for a living. Speaking and coaching is what I was born to do. However, its work, it takes energy. The soul needs rest, the mind needs a break. While it takes a lot of mental energy to ride a motorcycle and stay alive, it takes a different kind.
What is it that clears your mind, renews your soul and invigorates your core? EVERY year about 3 weeks before I leave I start considering NOT going. I think about the time away, the money, etc. Thankfully I have people in my life that say, “All of that won’t matter once you pull out of the driveway.” They are right. So my hope for you is that you find that thing.
For now, a big, black, fast, loud Harley is waiting. Saddle up!
