Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you.
“How can I improve my communication skills?”
Marty: Practice, it’s a skill like anything.
Mike: That’s right.
Marty: You wouldn’t expect to go out and be able to, I don’t know, professionally surf your first day or something. So it’s, it’s learning, you know what our, you know, the foundation or foundational aspects of how people communicate and then just working on those and practicing them.
Mike: That’s it. Learn the skills. Here’s how you improve your communication skills. You got to get out there and communicate. So you learn the skills you practice, the skills you learn from the mistakes you made, and you learn from the ones you make and then get back in and practice some more. You’re not going to learn to be a good communicator by waiting until you learn to be a good communicator.
It’s just like anything else. It’s just like you said, professional surfing. You can learn some lessons on the shore, but you’re not really going to become a good surfer until you get out there and start taking some waves. Communication’s the same way people often say to me, Well, you know, it’s easy for you. It wasn’t always easy, right? I still I still step in the middle of it often.
So learn the skills, practice the skills, and then get out there and be willing to fail at it until you get better at the practice. And then pretty soon you’re going to get good. Take some classes. There are a lot of classes out there on how to be an effective and assertive communicator. I think it’s one of the primary skills you got to learn in life anyway, right?
Marty: Yeah, hundred percent. You use it every day from the second you wake up to when you go to bed, you might as well be good at it.
Mike: That’s exactly right. Somebody is going to be good at it, right? Might as well be you. That’s how you get good at it. Thank you, everybody.
I hope that’s helpful.
