Hi everybody, I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people like you. Here’s this week’s question:
I’m 60 years old and find myself out of work and wanting a new career. I’m tired of sales and sales management, it used to be fun and now it’s not.
Let me answer your question because this is a real challenge for folks who are of a certain age.
I think the thing that you want to do if you want to get back into the job market, and you have traditionally been in sales management, is you are going to have to get into a job that you like that may not be a management job.
So, I think the first thing I would do is not be really picky, and just get yourself back in the workforce. What often happens with folks who are out of work is they get kind of down on themselves, they get discouraged, they get emotional, and they start getting a little prideful about the kind of work that they will do.
So I would just find something that interests you, maybe something that you’d like to try, and go out and try it. If you can find a job in leadership at your age with your experience more power to you! I will just tell you that if your expertise is sales and you want to do something else it becomes difficult.
First evaluate “Do I just need a job?” Secondly what is interesting to you? And then go search those things out. I will tell you if my coaching and speaking practice blew up today, I would probably go find a job job. Where it didn’t require huge amounts of training or development. I could get in there, I could get to work, just so I could keep my mind active.
I hope that’s helpful! Good luck in your search, I know that can be stressful. Take care.
