State of Leadership

Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.

“What is your opinion on the overall state of leadership? And what is one thing you would change?”

I think, overall, leaders are too timid in their leadership. I think we live in a world of ambiguity and where people are scared to really lead and really scared to take a position and scared to do the things necessary. Not scared like, afraid of the dark scared, but it’s kind of rough out there right now. I mean, you can hardly say anything without offending somebody. You can hardly do anything with without offending somebody.

So, my current belief about the state of leadership across industries where I am, particularly where I am involved, is that I believe we need to be bolder in our leadership. We need to plant the flag on the hill and say, come with me, we’re going to head there. Then, do the things necessary to provide the resources and clarity and accountability to help people get there. There are those who are more autocratic – this is what you’re going to do, and this is how you’re going to do it. That’s not leadership. There are those those that are constantly looking at every decision they make for the potential consequences of that decision. Certainly, I want you to pay attention to that.

But my bigger concern is that people aren’t really courageously saying, “let’s go that way” because they’re afraid that this group or that person or this person is going to go, “We don’t think that’s the right direction”. Well, then they should get into leadership and then they should provide a different direction in the meantime. You want to be clear about what the expectation is of you as a leader and say “this is the direction that we’re going”.

All that while, of course, considering others but not being so sensitive to others so that we’re like a marionette puppet being pulled by all the strings of the various things that are happening. That’s what I think.

I hope that’s helpful, take care.
