Truth Versus Belief

Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you.

“What is the difference between truth and belief? How does it affect relationships at home or at work?”

All right, Marty, I’m going to bring you in on this one. I know we didn’t plan on it, but what is the difference in truth and belief?

Mike: Here’s what I think. I think truth stands on its own. And I think belief is largely in what I own. What do you think?

Marty: Yeah, I completely agree. I think that truth, you know, is is an objective version of what’s going on. And your belief is your interpretation of that truth.

Mike: Brother, That’s a great answer. I got nothing. That’s really awesome.

How does it affect relationships? Here’s how it affects relationships at home and at work. If you believe your beliefs are the truth, then you’re going to hold on to the truth with all you got, right?

Marty: Yeah, absolutely.

Mike: And if you just think it’s I just believe this, I’m open to being wrong. I’m open to considering evidence to the contrary. Then you have room to grow. But if I am the Oracle of Truth, if I hold on to the truth, then that could be a problem, right?

Marty: Yeah, absolutely.

Mike: So this notion of the objective reality or this is what it is, man, I look at the circumstances. That’s the truth. This is a bottle of water. I believe it’s an ugly bottle of water. Marty, You think it’s a nice bottle of water, but we can’t really debate that. This is a partially full bottle of water. That’s the difference. And what happens and what’s happening a lot in our culture, I think, Marty, is that people are holding on to beliefs like their truth, and that creates significant amounts of problems.

Marty: I couldn’t agree more with you.

Mike: I’m going to make it Mondays with Marty. That’s really awesome. Well done, man. Thank you, everybody.

I hope that’s helpful.
