Hi everybody, I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question:
There is much negativity in the world, and now we have an election coming up. No matter who wins, there’s going to be an outcry! There’s probably going to be social unrest, there might even be riots. You are somewhat of a public figure, how do you stay out of the political debate and political environment?
By not answering questions like this.
You probably want a real answer. Yes, there is an election coming up. It doesn’t matter who you vote for, and it doesn’t matter who wins, it’s going to get ugly one way or the other. If Trump wins, all the Democrats and Biden people are going to go crazy. If Biden wins, all the Trump supporters and Republicans who support Trump are going to go crazy. It’s just going to happen, you might as well put your seatbelt on.
Here’s how I personally stay out of it. I don’t talk about it. I don’t position myself as an authority on politics. I do not like politics. I ignore them, largely. And yet I still have an impact, that impact is in the voting booth. That one little voice on the little card – that’s me.
I do not get involved in politics, and I don’t do it because you can’t win today. That’s the bottom line. If you take a stand politically right now, you are going to absolutely get eviscerated by people of different opinions. It’s wrong, it’s bad, it’s darn near immoral. That’s how I stay out of it.
I got asked last week on a podcast about my political beliefs about certain things, I said I don’t talk about it. They said they knew, but would I just answer this question? The answer is no, absolutely not, I will not talk about it. And the reason is that if you and I are sitting down over a cup of coffee, we’re talking about something, we’re not going to put a meaningful dent in the universe! The only thing we’re going to do is either make each other feel better because we agree, or we’re going to put tension in our relationship, and I’m not willing to do it. Life’s too short.
Until next time, take care.
