Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.
“Emotional intelligence has been a subject for a long time. Do you think it’s important today as ever? Do you think it’s getting better when it comes to work?”
It has been a subject for a long time. It’s more important now than ever, especially given the world that we live in. If you don’t have good self-awareness, I just don’t know how you lead well in this world. I know that there are leaders and I have worked with some who don’t have a lot of self-awareness. They don’t have a lot of circumstantial or social awareness. They don’t have it. They go through life. Ignorance is bliss in that they go through life not really knowing what they don’t know, but I will tell you that the fact is that if you don’t have self-awareness, it’s very hard to move forward. Yes, it’s as important as it ever was.
Do I think it’s getting better? I think awareness of it is getting better. I think that people notice a lack of it better. You probably know a person, all of you who are watching this right now, probably know a person who has absolutely no clue about themselves. They don’t know that they over talk. They don’t know that they’re a bad listener. They don’t know that they interrupt constantly. All of us know though that that’s a lack of self-awareness. Do I think it’s better in terms of awareness? I do. Do I think it’s better in terms of people teaching it? Absolutely.
Do I think it’s better overall? Yes. Do I think we are where we are at work? No, I am still stunned and amazed at the people who it is clear as it is clear to everybody else as can be and still can’t get it. That’s the answer to that. Hope that was helpful.
