Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.
“After much frustration and many attempts to make my current work situation work, I have decided to start looking for something else. My question is, do you have any thoughts about resumes? It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the job market.”
Well, the good news for you is it’s been a long time. So you’ve been in the job market. There are a lot of jobs out there right now and power is largely in the employee’s hands now that it didn’t used to be. Yeah. The most important thing about a resume in the times where we’re living right now is the resume needs to be focused on solving problems, so nobody really cares.
Maybe some people care about how long you work somewhere or what you did, but nobody really cares about that as much as they care about the problems that you solve. So I would list situations and what you did to solve problems that either helped the prospective employer make more money, help them solve more problems, or help them have better interactions with their customers.
If you do that, then you’re going to be a lot more marketable. The next thing you probably need to be thinking about as it relates to the job market is different. Jobs have different requirements now in terms of working from home or not working from home, all those kinds of things. So pay attention to that. I would not jump over your current ship, though, until you have a lifeboat because it’s kind of crazy out there right now.
I got if you can believe it, I got an actual got a email from Amazon that said I’d been accepted to work there. Really? How about that? Me loading trucks at Amazon. Can you see it? I can’t see it anyway. That’s what you need to do to solve problems and then ways where you have had an impact on customers, on sales or on company morale with specific scenarios.
Because employers today are looking to solve problems and the way that they solve problems is going to have a material impact on revenue and on their employees. So focus on that. Nobody really cares about you now. And on that intro thing, don’t put some cheesy corporate speak thing. Just say I’m this, I’ve done this, and here are a list of problems I solved and how I solved them.
They’ll go for it. All right. Hope that’s helpful.
Take care till next time.
