Should I Pursue My Dreams?

Hi, everybody, I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s the question:

Is ‘pursue your dreams’ good advice?

Dear Mike is ‘pursue your dreams’ good advice… I suppose it depends on what your dream is! Generally I think… you know that question’s really tough. Yes, it’s good advice, IF you’re pursuing a living, IF you’re being responsible, IF you’re not doing any harm, IF you’re doing good work in the world, then yeah it’s good advice. But just blind ‘pursue your dreams’, that’s not good advice. You need to be responsible, earning a living, making contributions to society. If your dream is bank robbery, no, it’s not good advice. If your dream is doing something that hurts people, no, it’s not good advice.


So, you’ve gotta be responsible. And I don’t mean you’ve gotta have a 9-5 job and do it the same way all the time. But ‘pursue your dreams’ is good in the context of doing the things that make you a good human being, as well as making you a good dreamer. Ok?


So pursue your dreams but be smart and responsible at the same time.
