Loyalty

 

Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.

“At what point does loyalty to a company or relationship become a weakness or detriment to my mental, emotional or career health?”

Your loyalty becomes a detriment when your mental or emotional health is suffering because of loyalty. One of my top 10 values is loyalty. There have been times in my life where I have been loyal to an organization or to a person, when I can see my own mental and emotional health start to spiral. The way that you avoid it, is that you avoid it by making sure that you are mindful of your emotional and mental and psychological health, or career health in your case is what you asked for.

I have coached people, I have worked with people who talk about the dysfunction at work, who have a business that’s clearly going nowhere, who refuse to think through this notion of, what does their career path look like, and they have ridden organizations or relationships right into the ground. Now, that being said, the moment I have the impulse to leave because it’s being uncomfortable, because the organization’s is uncomfortable or the relationship, I have to evaluate myself, then I have to say, “You know what, I might need to stay a little longer, I might need to think about this.”

When your own mental, emotional and career health is becoming a problem, in other words, your personal relationships are suffering, you’re not doing your activities of daily living or living your best life, because the relationship or the organization is continuing to drain that from you, you got to make some adjustments. I’m not suggesting you leave the relationship or leave the job, but I am suggesting a psychological career and mental reset so that you’re focusing on the things that ultimately enhance you while enhancing the business or the relationship.
