Should I be looking for a Job?




Hi, everybody, I’m Mike Staver, this is Mondays with Mike, a weekly show where I answer questions from people just like you. Well, I don’t know if they’re just like you but they’re people, and they send me questions. Here we go:


Dear Mike, I’m in an HR job. I’m not the most senior, but I am a manager. Our firm is going through a restructuring that is resulting in layoffs. I’m the person that’s coordinating those layoffs. The other day I was organizing and preparing for the next round of layoffs when it occurred to me: “When does this wave of layoffs get to the HR department?”

Should I be looking for a job or am I just paranoid?



Yes, and yes. You are paranoid, and you should be looking for a job. Here’s the deal:


If layoffs are going through the whole company right now, you’re kind of in the department that’s coordinating those. But, the bigger question I think you need to ask is if your company is in such a way that there are multiple rounds of layoffs and they keep happening, is that the kind of company you want to align yourself with for the long run?


Perhaps it’s time for you to look for a job that has more stability and more of a sense of where it’s headed and not such a sense of scarcity and trying to pull back. And while I understand layoffs have to happen from time to time, I’m concerned that there is enough going on at your organization that it’s multiple rounds after multiple rounds. So yeah, I’d get my resume out there. Yeah, I’d pay attention to what’s going on on the street. Because you never know when your number’s gonna be up.
