Consequences of Letting Things Slide

Hi, everybody. I’m Mike Staver. This is Mondays with Mike, a weekly video series where I answer questions from people just like you. Here’s this week’s question.

“How do I rectify a situation that I’ve let slide? It’s a habit of one of my agents that I’ve been ignoring.”

Wow, that’s how you rectify it. You admit it. You sit them down and go, “Look, I got to be honest with you. I’ve let this slide for a long time. It’s developed into a habit. Here are the consequences.” Admission, acknowledgment, and here’s what’s happening as a result.

I’ve been allowing contracts to come in incomplete, and I’ve been covering the gaps in the contract and it’s starting to have a negative effect on the staff who’s having to correct them, so we’re going to have to get contracts fixed when you turn them in. I’ve let it slide. That was my responsibility but we need to make a change going forward.

I love it. You own responsibility to your agent. Talk to your agent about it. Tell your agents what’s happened but it has to change. Now if they’re a prima donna or they’re high maintenance, they’re going to go, “It wasn’t a problem before. Why is it all of a sudden a problem?” Say, “You’re right. It wasn’t a problem before. Here’s why it’s a problem,” just to answer their question.

It’s a problem because when the contract comes in but that’s what the issue is. If the contract comes in incomplete, then it comes to me and I look at it, then I hand it to the staff. Then the staff goes trying to cover it and fix it, it makes you believe everything’s fine. It puts more work on the staff and it stresses everybody out. From now on, that’s the way it’s going to be, and just state it emphatically. Not, if you could do me a favor or if you could help us out or I’d really appreciate– no, you’re the leader. Step into the role, acknowledge your responsibility, set the path forward, help them understand the consequences.

Hope that was helpful.
